Luxury Lighting: My Top Tips
Let’s talk lighting.
Lighting is more than just a necessity—it’s a design element that shapes the ambiance, function, and overall aesthetic of your home. Beyond aesthetics, lighting psychologically impacts us, influencing mood, productivity, and relaxation. The right lighting can make a space feel inviting, enhance natural beauty, and even shift our emotional state.
From maximizing natural light to incorporating statement fixtures, here’s how to curate a well-lit, luxurious home.
Large windows allow natural light to pour in
Natural Light: Your Best Design Tool
Before even considering artificial lighting, take full advantage of natural light—it’s the most flattering, energy-efficient, and mood-boosting source available.
How to Enhance Natural Light:
Keep windows unobstructed with sheer curtains or adjustable shades for privacy without sacrificing brightness.
Use mirrors and reflective surfaces to amplify light and create an airy feel.
Opt for glass doors and tall windows to flood spaces with sunlight.
Maintain an open floor plan to let light travel freely.
If you have them, remove shutters. They are bulky and keep a lot of light out — even when open.

Layer Your Lighting for Depth & Ambiance
The secret to a perfectly lit home is layering different lighting types to create dimension and warmth.
The Three Layers of Lighting:
Ambient Lighting – General illumination from chandeliers, recessed lighting, or flush mounts.
Task Lighting – Focused light for specific functions, like under-cabinet kitchen lighting or bedside reading lamps.
Accent Lighting – Highlights architectural details, artwork, or key décor pieces with wall sconces, picture lights, or cove lighting.
Dimmer switches allow you to control intensity, shifting from bright and lively to soft and intimate.
Oversized kitchen pendants—my favorite.
Go Big with Statement Lighting
Luxury spaces deserve lighting that commands attention. Beyond functionality, light fixtures can be sculptural, artistic, and transformative.
How to Make a Statement:
Oversized chandeliers that set the tone for grand spaces.
Sculptural sconces and pendants that double as art.
Fixtures crafted from premium materials like alabaster, brass, and hand-blown glass for an elevated touch.
Placement Tip: Dining room chandeliers should hang a minimum of 36 inches above the table, and kitchen island pendants should be 34-42 inches above the counter.
We combined recessed lights with beautiful pendants to keep it functional but beautiful.
Mastering Overhead Lighting Without the Harshness
Overhead lighting is essential but should never be the only source of illumination—harsh, unbalanced light can make a space feel cold or flat.
How to Balance Overhead Lighting:
Use cool-toned bulbs for a crisp, modern look that mimics daylight.
Space recessed lighting evenly (4–6 feet apart) to avoid shadows.
Smart bulbs allow for customizable brightness and energy efficiency.
Always layer with lamps, sconces, and accent lights to soften the space.
Flattering Bathroom Lighting: A Must-Have
Good bathroom lighting is non-negotiable—it impacts everything from your morning routine to the way your space feels at night.
Bathroom Lighting Essentials:
Sconces beside the mirror (rather than above) provide even, shadow-free illumination.
Overhead fixtures like flush or semi-flush mounts ensure general brightness.
A chandelier above the tub (if codes allow) adds a spa-like sophistication.
Dimmable lighting lets you transition from bright, functional light to a soft, relaxing glow.
Understanding Lumens & Kelvins: The Key to Perfect Lighting
Selecting the right light bulb isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about crafting the perfect ambiance. Two key factors determine the effect of a light source:
Lumens measure brightness—the higher the lumens, the brighter the light.
Kelvin temperature (K) defines the color of the light, ranging from warm and inviting to crisp and cool.
In luxury interiors, balancing these elements ensures that lighting enhances textures, materials, and the overall mood of a space.
Luxury lighting isn’t just about illumination—it’s about creating an experience. By combining natural light, strategic layering, and statement pieces, you can transform your home into a stunning, well-lit masterpiece.
