How to Create the Perfect Kitchen Island Focal Point

Hey guys! Today we are discussing styling the kitchen island. When it comes to the focal point of the kitchen, I have developed a styling combination that never fails.

I love creating stunning displays using big vases and fun (real and faux) floral arrangements. It not only add a touch of elegance and freshness to any space but also serves as a focal point, giving you something to focus on. Overtime, I have developed a styling combination that simply never fails. Let's talk about how to create this look in your own space.

This look symbolizes what I believe luxury design encompasses—the perfect blend of beauty and function. An oversized vase with vibrant flowers or greenery provides us with beauty while the practical bowl or tray not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the space but also serves a functional purpose. Whether used for display or to hold everyday essentials like fruit or keys, this pairing epitomizes the elegance and practicality that define my design philosophy.

In a hurry? Here’s how you can create this look in 5 steps:

  1. Define your kitchen style—modern, traditional, eclectic, etc.

  2. Choose an oversized vase that complements your kitchen’s aesthetic. Oversized = Big Impact!

  3. Pair it with a complementary bowl or tray for balance.

  4. Select the right floral arrangement, opting for faux flowers for durability.

  5. Add decorative (or functional) accents to the bowl or tray, if desired. Switch them out for the seasons to keep the look fresh and fun!

The Perfect Kitchen Focal Point

This styling combination balances beauty and functionality with a touch of personality, making it an absolute staple in my designs. To create this look, I combine an oversized vase filled with flowers or branches and pair it with a small contrasting bowl or tray. As my marketing director jokes, you can always tell if I have been near a surface if there’s a big vase and a little bowl/tray. I'm a creature of habit...what can I say? But she is right, this combination is my go-to because it’s incredibly versatile and effortless to mix and match.

By experimenting with various materials, colors, shapes, and sizes, this look can be endlessly reimagined, ensuring it remains a timeless addition to any kitchen island, dining table, or any other large surface. Whether your taste leans towards modern minimalism or traditional opulence, choosing this look allows you to infuse your space with the elegance you desire—and a touch of my signature flair!

Vase Shapes + Styles

Step one is to choose your vase. At LWD, we opt for oversized vases because they make a big impact.

When choosing vase shapes and styles, I prefer to mix classic elegance with a touch of modern flair. Opting for sleek, cylindrical vases often complements contemporary kitchen designs, while more ornate, geometric shapes can add a traditional touch. Consider the overall aesthetic of your kitchen—whether it’s minimalist or eclectic—and choose vases that harmonize with existing decor elements. Remember to vary heights and textures for visual interest! Experiment with contrasting materials like glass, ceramic, or metallic finishes to elevate the sophistication of your display. Finding the Perfect Match

When it comes to finding the perfect bowls and trays, I start with a vase and search for complementary items. I’m drawn to pieces with subtle elegance, such as ceramics, polished marble, or natural wood finishes, which add a luxurious touch.

Pro Tip: Start with a statement vase that reflects your personal style—whether it’s a family heirloom, an antique or brand new. Pair it with a bowl or tray that complements the vase's texture and color. This approach not only provides a clear process but also ensures a cohesive and balanced look.

Florals, Greenery, and Branches...Oh My!

When selecting florals for the kitchen island, my goal is to create something beautiful but balanced.

That's why sometimes I opt for the timeless simplicity of faux magnolia stems, appreciating their understated elegance and ability to effortlessly elevate any space. This choice aligns with a more minimalist aesthetic, emphasizing clean lines and natural beauty.

I also love a more whimsical approach, incorporating a variety of flowers with different textures and colors (see below). This allows for playful experimentation, creating a dynamic focal point that captivates with its charm and vibrancy. Whether choosing the simplicity of magnolias or embracing a more eclectic mix, each arrangement is meticulously curated to harmonize with the overall design of the kitchen and evoke a sense of luxury and refinement.

Long story short...go with branches or simple greenery for a minimal aesthetic while a big floral arrangement will make a big statement. Choose your florals based on the vibe you want. And don’t stress, you can always switch them out as you change your mind.

Start by establishing the style of your kitchen—whether it's modern, traditional, or somewhere in between. Next, select a vase that seamlessly integrates with your existing decor, serving as the focal point. This bigger the vase, the bigger the impact. Once you've chosen your vase, find its complementary bowl or tray to create a balanced and cohesive arrangement. You want the textures, shapes, and colors to seamlessly go together (see below for inspiration). Finally, add the right floral arrangement to enhance the aesthetic appeal, opting for faux flowers for longevity and easy maintenance.
