Where to Save + Splurge: Interior Design Edition

When it comes to home design, knowing where to splurge and where to save is everything.

In a perfect world, every finish would be custom, every pillow hand-sewn in Europe, and every drawer lined in velvet. But in this world? Prices have skyrocketed in recent years—materials, labor, freight—and even the most generous budgets require thoughtful planning.

We’ve seen firsthand how quickly costs can add up, so part of our job is helping clients invest wisely. That means knowing where quality truly matters, and where you can scale back without sacrificing the overall look or feel.

Here’s our guide to where we splurge, where we save, and where it depends—because a well-designed home is all about balance.

Where to Splurge

These are the pieces and finishes we always recommend investing in. They’re used daily, anchor the overall design, and make the biggest impact when it comes to comfort, longevity, and visual appeal.

1. Upholstered Furniture
Think: sofas, lounge chairs, dining chairs. These get the most use and set the tone for how a space feels. Invest in quality construction, durable fabrics, and timeless silhouettes that won’t feel dated in five years.

2. Cabinetry & Countertops
In kitchens, bathrooms, and built-ins, this is where splurging pays off long-term. High-quality cabinetry wears better, functions better, and looks beautiful for decades. The same goes for countertops—especially in high-use areas like the kitchen island or bathroom vanities.

3. Light Fixtures
Lighting is like the jewelry of a home. Well-chosen fixtures can instantly elevate a room, even with simple finishes elsewhere. We love using high-end lighting to bring in a wow factor.

4. Decorative Pillows, Linens, and Bedding
A custom decorative pillows is crucial to have that designer look. Custom or high-end pillows, drapery, and bedding bring depth, softness, and a finished feel that off-the-shelf options often lack.

5. Plumbing Fixtures (Usually!)
Whether to save or splurge on plumbing fixtures really depends on the finish you choose. If you're choosing a brass fixture, it’s worth spending a little more because cheaper versions just don’t have the same beautiful finish. For other finishes like polished nickel or matte black, you can often save without sacrificing style.

Where to Save

Some elements don’t need to be top-of-the-line to look great or do the job well. These are perfect areas to scale back a bit, especially if you want to allocate more of your budget to the splurge-worthy items.

1. End Tables & Side Tables
These are great places to mix in more affordable pieces. You can find beautiful options at all price points, and they don’t experience a ton of wear and tear.

2. Rugs
Don’t get me wrong. I love a beautiful hand-knotted rug. However, there are so many great-looking, budget-friendly options that still bring in texture and warmth.

3. Cabinet Hardware
It’s easy to swap hardware later if your budget doesn’t allow for your dream knobs and pulls right away. Keep it simple and cohesive—you can always upgrade down the road.

4. Backsplash
Not every backsplash has to be a showstopper. A classic subway tile or a clean, minimal design can be both affordable and timeless. Let other areas take the spotlight. But if you do want to splurge on your backsplash in one area of the home, I recommend splurging on your kitchen or primary bath.

The truth is, great design isn’t about spending the most—it’s about spending well.

When you’re intentional about where you invest and where you edit, the result is a home that feels elevated, functional, and completely tailored to you. Whether you’re working with a generous budget or trying to stretch every dollar, the right strategy makes all the difference.

If you're not sure where to start, we're here to guide you through it. Because no matter the price point, your home should feel like your favorite place to be.
